Recount Confirms Nelson Andrews Election to Council

The Election Committee conducted a recount of the July 11 Special Election on Friday, July 16; confirming Nelson Andrews, Jr. election to tribal council. Nelson and David Pocknett, Sr. were separated by just 1 vote. The recount on July 16 confirmed the vote count on July 11.

All candidates were invited to observe the recount. In addition, David and Nelson were allowed to invite one witness to observe the process.

MWT Emergency Management Department Seeking Tribal Contractor for Garage/Shed Buildout

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Emergency Management Department is currently seeking a skilled tribal member to assemble a 30’ x 30’ width, 12’ height steel tube, sheet metal single door garage. This is a “Versa Tube” building system complete kit that will be installed on a cement pad.

The selected contractor will be responsible for assembly of kit and leveling shed/garage to existing cement pad area. All building materials and assembly instructions will be provided. Selected contractor must be licensed and provide own, tools, ladders, helpers, transportation etc. A w-9 must be completed following the executed contract.

Accepting Final Applications for AmeriCorps Program

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Emergency Management Department is currently seeking enthusiastic and pro-active tribal members 18 and over. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program was paused. We are now accepting applications until September, 17th 2021. There will be 5 AmeriCorps positions available. We will not be able to accept applications beyond this date.

Update from the Community Development Corporation: Connecting Tradition and Enterprise

Tribally Owned Businesses are Top performers in securing millions of dollars in government contracts. According to the The Harvard School of Business, “tribally owned enterprises that are insulated from political interference are about four times as likely to be profitable as those that are not.” Insulating tribal business entities from political interference is accomplished by establishing a managing board of directors and a corporate charter that is beyond the direct control of tribal council members.

Leadership Seek Input from Community: Complete the Fiscal Recovery Funds Survey

In keeping with a commitment to honor the voice of the tribal community, tribal council and tribal operations are asking tribal citizens to complete a short survey. The survey will help guide the tribe in the distribution of ARPA Funds for Tribal Operations. It is our goal to provide support for the programs and services that are most needed in the community.

Landscape Consultant Needed for First Light Homes

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe (MWT) Housing Department is seeking a qualified Indigenous Landscape Consultant to assist the Landscape Architect to design and plan our new 42-unit housing development, including common areas. The consultant will assist in the planning of indigenous plants to be incorporated into our overall landscape design and transplant existing site foliage. Site walk-through scheduled during the weeks of August 9, 2021 and August 16, 2021; Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All interested parties, please contact the Housing Department at (508) 477-0208 extension 104. All relevant information regarding this contract will be discussed during the walk-through. Closing date on September 3, 2021 at 2 p.m.

Update from MWT Emergency Management on increase in Covid Cases

Since July 1st 2021 we have seen marked case increases in Barnstable County. In addition, Provincetown has a case cluster associated with it which has boosted Barnstable County new case figures significantly.

At the end of July, case increases were in nearly all Cape Cod Towns and are not necessarily associated with the Provincetown Cluster. Cases had also increased on the Islands, particularly on Nantucket.

Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Emergency Management Department - Brief Internship Opportunity

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Emergency Management Department (MWT EMD) has limited internships available for interested high school students toward the end of the month of August.

Interns will gain valuable professional experience by working alongside the Emergency Management Department. The four pillars of emergency management: Operations, Planning, Logistics, Finance & Admin will be focused on. Basic Incident Command Systems Trainings and Red Cross, First-Aid, CPR, AED certificate trainings will be provided as well.

Covid Vaccines Available for Tribal Members 12 and Older

The most Current USET Report indicates that the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is currently at 28.4% fully vaccinated while USET reports that the state of Massachusetts is currently at 47.3% fully vaccinated. We strongly encourage anyone that is eligible for vaccination to call IHS at 508-539-2561 to schedule an appointment at the soonest. Mashpee IHS is now vaccinating Tribe and family members, age 12 and up.

General Membership Meeting at Pawâw Grounds

Through the warm months, our general membership meetings will be held on the Pawâw Grounds. Tribal citizens are asked to bring chairs or blankets for seating. These meetings are held the second Sunday of the month from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and are open to tribal members and their families. These meetings are not open to the public.
