Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Supports Regional Shelters with Donation of 72 Cots
“The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is proud to support Barnstable County and our regional partners through the donation of 72 emergency shelter cots,” said Nelson Andrews Jr., Emergency Management Director for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. “Following the recent blizzard, we identified a need for additional sheltering resources across the Cape and moved quickly through our government surplus program to help fill that gap. This included an additional order of new cots at no cost.”
The donation is another example of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe’s ongoing commitment to regional emergency preparedness and community care. After Blizzard Hernando, the Tribe’s Emergency Management Department opened the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Community and Government Center as a warming center and overnight shelter, welcoming residents from the Upper Cape and surrounding communities during a time of need.
The 72 cots were recently picked up by Barnstable County emergency management staff and will now become part of the County’s regional shelter system, helping support communities across Cape Cod in future emergencies. The effort also reflected the strong coordination between the Tribe and regional partners working together to strengthen preparedness, response, and recovery across the Cape.
Andrews also recognized Emergency Management Assistant Adam Jonas Jr. for his support in loading and staging the cots for deployment. As part of the Tribe’s continued work in emergency management, the department remains committed to standing ready to assist whenever needed.
