Wampanoag families, community members, and friends are invited to gather at Franklin Park in Boston on Sunday, October 18, 2026, for the public unveiling of the final design for the White Pine Gathering Circle, a proposed monument and gathering place for Scarboro Hill.
The event begins at 2:00 PM and will include a presentation of the final monument design, remarks about the community process and the importance of the Franklin Park site, and a performance by the Wampanoag Singers and Dancers. It will also be an opportunity to hear more about the next steps needed to move the project from design into fabrication and installation.
The White Pine Gathering Circle grew from a community-led process involving state and federally recognized Wampanoag Tribes. At the center of the design is our Creation Story and the teachings it carries about reciprocity, balance, and our responsibilities to the land and water. The goal has always been to create more than a monument. The Gathering Circle is being designed as a living place where people can gather, teach, reflect, and continue sharing Wampanoag history and culture in a public space.
The approved concept includes an outer ring of living White Pine trees, Corten steel columns that step inward toward circular stone seating, and a central water element surrounding a large coil-built clay cooking pot representing Maushop. Red light beneath the pot will evoke fire, while small stone puckwudgies will appear throughout the landscape as details for visitors to discover.
For our community, the unveiling is an important chance to see the final design together and recognize the many voices that helped shape it. It is also a chance to bring Wampanoag presence, story, and responsibility for place into a highly visible public landscape in Boston.
The October 18 gathering is a design unveiling and site presentation, not the dedication of an installed monument. Tribal members are encouraged to attend and be part of this next step in the project.
