Two Mashpee Wampanoag artists had a big night in Boston as Mwalim DaPhunkee Professor and The ZYG 808 each brought home top honors at the inaugural Y.O.U.R. Music Awards on September 5 at the historic Strand Theatre.
Mwalim was named Best Blues Artist, while The ZYG 808 received the award for Best RockHop Artist. Y.O.U.R., which stands for Your Own Unique Repertoire, celebrates musical artists from across New England, with winners selected through a people’s-choice nomination and voting process.
Both artists were also among just 13 performers invited to take the stage during the awards ceremony. Mwalim performed “A Party at the Crossroads” from his album THUNDERCHILD, while The ZYG 808 performed “Watch ’Em Run” from his current album MR. Z.
Mwalim and The ZYG 808 both record for Poly-Groove Records and are members of the multi-Grammy-nominated band The GroovaLottos. Their wins are another proud moment for Mashpee artists continuing to carry their creativity, voices, and music to audiences far beyond home.
Congratulations to Mwalim and The ZYG 808 on this recognition.
