HUD Official Tours As Wampanoag Housing Nears Completion
The frames of several soon-to-be completed buildings stood amid plots of dirt and construction as General Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public and Indian Housing Dominique Blom toured the site of First Light Wampanoag Homes last month.
Led by members of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe and the tribe’s housing department, the tour was an early look at the 42 units that will soon provide affordable housing for tribal members on reservation land along Meetinghouse Road.
“The houses will provide a dramatic need for the community given the high rental prices on the Cape,” Ms. Blom said. “The tribe should be proud.”
Michelle Tobey, the tribe’s housing director, said the project will help address the problem of homelessness facing many of the tribe’s members.
“The dream is to help as many homeless tribal members as possible,” Ms. Tobey said.
Chairman's Column
Wunee keesuq Tribal family,
It’s hard to believe that the fall season is right around the corner…our summers always seem to move past us far too quickly. We tend to squeeze in a lot of family, powwows and good food in the summer. We’ve also been moving diligently through our work in operations and at the Council table over the past few months and I’m happy to report on the solid progress we’ve made.
Let’s start with our housing project. Affordable housing is a major problem for our tribe and the region
Education Department to Provide Before School Care
Children in grades PreK – 6 in the Coombs School and the Quashnet School can now receive before school care at the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Community and Government Center. A parent letter and registration form are available in the Education Department.
Parents that enroll in the program will be able to drop their child off between 7:45 and 8:25 AM during school days at the Community and Government Center. Education staff will supervise the program and walk the children to the bus stop at River Road and Great Neck Road where they will take the bus to the KC Coombs and Quashnet Schools.
The Before School Care will start on the first days of school (September 3 for grades 1-6 and September 4 for grades PK & K).
