The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has postponed its 99th annual powwow, which had been scheduled for July, as the COVID-19 health crisis continues to impact public gatherings.
The postponement of the traditional celebration of Mashpee Wampanoag culture was announced on the tribe’s website in a post by the powwow committee.
“As you are well aware, we are enduring a pandemic which has halted on gathering as one,” said Brian Weeden. “With a heavy heart, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Powwow Committee has decided to postpone our 99th Annual Homecoming until further notice. We are hopeful to plan a fall Powwow and receive well needed medicine from all directions.”
The cultural event, which is held at the powwow grounds adjacent to the tribe’s community and government center in Mashpee, features Native American dancing, drumming, games, food art, jewelry, wampum, crafts and clothing.
