Chairman Weeden Calls for Action on Tribal Housing at National Convention

Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Chairman Brian Weeden, who also serves as First Vice President of the National Congress of American Indians, provided opening remarks this week at the National American Indian Housing Council’s 52nd Annual Convention & Tradeshow in Anchorage, Alaska.

During his remarks, Chairman Weeden emphasized the urgent need for Congress to reauthorize and modernize the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act, known as NAHASDA. The legislation is a critical tool for Tribal Nations working to address housing needs in their communities through self-determined, locally driven solutions.

For 13 years, Tribal Nations have waited for NAHASDA reauthorization to move forward. Chairman Weeden noted that the delay has not been because of opposition, but because of inaction. He called this moment an opportunity for bipartisan action that honors the federal trust responsibility and strengthens Tribal self-determination.

Across Indian Country, housing remains one of the most pressing issues facing Tribal communities. Reauthorizing and modernizing NAHASDA would help Tribal Nations continue building and rehabilitating homes, supporting families, and addressing housing challenges in ways that reflect the needs of their own communities.

Chairman Weeden’s remarks lifted up the importance of trusting Tribal Nations to solve local problems with local solutions. As he shared, the coalition is mobilized, the bills are drafted, and the time for Congress to act is now.

Tribal citizens and community members are encouraged to learn more and contact their Congressional representatives in support of NAHASDA reauthorization.
