Crystal "Bright Shining Star" Asiwe: Great Granddaughter of Etta Francis Tobey Granddaughter of Everett Franklin Tobey Sr. Daughter of Marie "Wildrose" Tobey Crystal graduated Sigma Alpha Pi from Southern New Hampshire University with a Bachelor's of Science Degree/Community Health in August. Crystal plans on pursuing her Master's in Nursing Education.
Maia Asiwe, Great-Great Granddaughter of Etta Francis Tobey, Great-granddaughter of Everett Franklin Tobey Sr., Granddaughter of Marie “Wildrose” Tobey, Daughter of Crystal “Bright Shining Star” Asiwe. Maia graduated Phi Theta Kappa from Massasoit Community College with an Associate’s Degree of Liberal Arts and High Honors from New Heights Charter School of Brockton with a high school diploma. Maia will attend UMASS Boston’s College of Nursing and Health Science in September. Maia plan's on becoming a cardiac surgeon in the future.
Billy Atkins is a tribal member from Baltimore Maryland. He graduated from Mount Saint Joseph High School on May 29th. He is the oldest of four children. He is son to Bill and Sheryl Atkins. Billy was an honor student at Mount Saint Joseph High School. He played quarterback at Mount Saint Joseph High School and broke several passing records in tCameron.Greendeer@mwtribe-nsn.gov
Edwin Cooley has successfully graduated from his apprenticeship with the UA Local 51, Plumbers and Pipefitters Class of 2021. Edwin completed the five-year program and will continue a successful career in his field.
Chyna Foxx has recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from Virginia Commonwealth University's (VCU) School of Nursing. She will begin working at Georgetown Hospital in Washington, DC this July 2021.
Zoë Harris (daughter of Gordon Harris and granddaughter of Barbara Harris) will be earning her Master's in Public Health from Northeastern University (NEU) this Spring. Zoë is a current Martin Luther King Jr. Fellow at NEU and was recently inducted into the NEU chapter of Delta Omega, the public health honor society. Starting this Fall, Zoë will be pursuing her PhD in Community Health Sciences.
Ryan Hendricks graduated high school. He was a four year member of the football program, a 1 year member of the track team and a 3 year member of the basketball program where he was a senior co-captain and a 2 time SSL All Star. He is a member of the National Honors Society and National Math Honors Society. He plans to attend East Carolina College to study business management.
Samara Julia Jackson Tobey, the daughter of Bryan and Priscilla Tobey and grandaughter of Lawrence "Sonny" S. Tobey II, is a 2021 graduate of The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with a BA in Anthropology and Native American Studies. She will be continuing her graduate studies this coming fall at The University of Washington to attain her MEd/PhD in Learning Sciences and Human Development with research in decolonial pedagogies, displaced/urban Native identity, belonging and wellness in post-secondary and higher education.
Haley Johnson is a Spring 2021 graduate from Rhode Island College, studying Ceramics and Art History, their art and research is cultivated from an understanding of activism and their experiences as an indigenous person. This summer, they will continue their Indigenous Empowerment Network Internship at the Tomaquag Museum in Exeter, RI. In the Fall, they will be starting a year-long Fellowship with The Steel Yard (Providence, RI) to continue their large- scale sculpture series concentrating on the importance of food sovereignty and the land back movement for Mashpee and beyond.
Jordan Miles Makahiapo Keliinui graduated with his Masters of Science in Cyber Security from UMass-Lowell. Jordan also holds a bachelor degree in political science from UMass-Amherst with a minor in computer science. Jordan works for Raytheon and is a former recipient of tribal scholarship funding offered by the Education Department as well as WIOA resources. He is the son of Trish Keliinui.
Kaylee V. Malgeri, graduated from Falmouth High School on June 5, 2021. Kaylee is the daughter of Dommonique Domino, the granddaughter of Renee Banks and great granddaughter of Bernadine Pocknett & the late Nelson Avant. Kaylee will be attending Framingham State University in the fall.
Morgan James Peters, II, also known as "Zyg" or "The ZYG 808", graduated from Mashpee High School. He is a member of the jazz band, chorus, and A/V Squad. A 2-time Grammy nominated recording artist in hip-hop. A percussionist since age 4, and a featured artist at the Boston Jazz Fest since 2014, Morgan is an honor student, he has been in the dual enrollment program at Cape Cod Community College since his Junior year.
He has been the chair of the Cape Cod NAACP Youth Committee for the last three years. For the last two years he has had a radio show and podcast on WKKL called "The Cipher". In 2018, Morgan received Grammy consideration in Hip-Hop for songs on his self-released mixtape, "At The Party".
Music and culture ties together all of Morgan's fond memories of Mashpee High. "I will miss the jazz band, chorus, Indian Ed, and the MC ciphers (a performance-poetry workshop for rappers) in the library. Mashpee High has a couple of great MCs (rappers)."
Currently completing his senior seminar internship as an apprentice audio engineer at Polyphonic Studios in Buzzard's Bay, Morgan produced and released a 5-song mixtape called "Beat Lounge Notes" for his seminar project; with select singles available on Spotify and Apple Music, and the whole project available for streaming on audiomack and bandcamp. “After graduating Mashpee Middle-High School, I will be attending Goddard college to study music composition and audio engineering." Since Morgan will have completed almost two years of college upon graduating high school, he is considering completing a Bachelors and possible Masters, and plans to pursue a career in music and audio production as well as arts education.
Daniel Peters Booth (DJ) will be graduating from Mashpee Middle-High school on June 5th. He is the son of Joanne Peters and Daniel Booth Sr. The grandson of Ed & Jayne Peters and the great grandson of Ellsworth (Pete) and Abigail Evelyn Peters. His clan mother is Anita Peters (Mother Bear) of the Bear clan.
DJ enjoyed his time at Mashpee High with his cousins and friends while also playing on the football, track and lacrosse teams. He also enjoys traveling and dancing around the country at different powwows with his family.
In August, he will be attending Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado where he will be studying Criminal Justice. His goal after college graduation is to work his way up as an agent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
DJ is so excited to start a new chapter of independence in his life and has made his family very proud!
Machayla Joy Randall graduating with top honors with All AP Classes/ She has chosen to Attend Georgia Institute of Technology majoring in Chemistry. She is the daughter of Genene and Jerrold /NJ and the granddaughter of Gladys (Dove) and George /NY/ Great Granddaughter of Adeline Beus (Mills) and Donald Hicks.
Iman Tobey Miley graduated in May having received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, RI. She would like to continue in this area by doing an internship or finding a job that relates to her degree and eventually pursue further by getting her Masters Degree.
In high school Iman attended and graduated from Ella Grasso Technical High School where she studied in the field of Hospitality. It was not until college that she realized her passion to work with children. This came after volunteering to help in an elementary after school program.
Iman felt strong about this area and appreciated the criteria behind it along with having great professors who taught the classes. With her interest in social work, she hopes to find a position that will help expand her knowledge for the career path she is about to enter.
Josh Vigneau is graduating from Nauset Regional High School. Josh is an artist and will be attending Cape Cod Community College for two years with hopes of transferring to Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston to complete his Bachelor’s degree in visual arts. He is considering taking advantage of the tribe’s new articulation agreement with the Institute of American Indian Arts in Sante Fe, New Mexico which would allow him to transfer all his credits there as well. Josh’s family has a history of relatives who pursued art. His Dad as well as his Grandfather and Great-Grandfather on his mother’s side of the family were all artists. Also, his cousin, Rose Lewis was a well-known artist in the Tribe. Josh’s love of art and his inspiration comes from his grandmother, Vivian Bussiere, the late George Lewis’s daughter. Josh’s interests include illustration, sculpting, and painting. He draws his inspiration from nature, zoology, biology, and visiting new places as well as from his grandmother who inspired him at a young age with drawing. Art teachers at school introduced him to new mediums such as printing, collage, and sculpting. His work is currently on exhibit at the Eastham Public Library in a show of Nauset HS student work where he won a $100 first place prize. In the past, his work has been shown at the Art Association in Orleans and at the Cape Cod Mall through his participation in the Provincetown Modern Art Museum youth program. Through the NYCP program, Josh did an internship at the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis in the summer of 2019. Josh’s other interactions in tribal programs include fishing, college visits, and financial skills workshops with the NYCP program, Turtle Camp, and language classes. Josh has a bright future ahead of him and we wish him well. Josh was recently accepted to Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, MA. He will also be receiving a Presidential Scholarship in the amount of $19,500.
