The Honor the Earth Fair, hosted by the Native Land Conservancy and the MWT Natural Resources Department, took place last month at the Community and Government Center. The event highlighted the shared mission to protect and preserve the ancestral homelands of the Wampanoag through informative tabling, educational resources, and guest speakers. Hundreds of visitors had meaningful discussions about land stewardship, environmental protection, and sustainable living methods throughout the day.
The Taste of the Earth cooking contest was a highlight for many who attended. Contestants submitted a plant-based recipe that designated judges then tasted and ranked. The food submissions varied greatly from pasta sauce to sweet potato pudding, and with nine in total, it made for a tough decision come voting time. Ultimately, tribal member and James Beard Awardee Sherry Pocknett took home the first-place prize for her dish and was awarded a hand-crafted pot by tribal elder, artisan, and NLC Founding President Ramona Peters.
Kutâputunumuw to the Native Land Conservancy and Natural Resources Department for hosting this fun and informative event.
