The Massachusetts Senate President, Karen Spilka, will be hosting the 85th Citizens’ Legislative Seminar on April 11 and 12, 2023. The seminar is an initiative aimed at educating citizens about the workings of their state government and increasing civic engagement. Each Senator was encouraged to nominate one constituent to participate in the seminar, and Mashpee Select Board Chair and Tribal Councilman David Weeden was nominated by Senator Moran to attend.
During the two-day seminar, citizens will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the Legislature, the legislative process, and the state budget through engaging presentations by Senators and staff. The seminar will culminate with a simulated legislative hearing and a simulated Senate session, in which participants will be invited to participate and vote as “Senators” in the Senate Chamber. This event is an excellent opportunity for citizens to learn more about their government and become more involved in the legislative process. Overall, the Citizens’ Legislative Seminar is a vital part of the Massachusetts Senate’s efforts to engage citizens and promote civic education.
