I was happy to learn that the supreme court made a monumental decision to uphold the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). Our Tribe has followed this case carefully and for good reason. This federal law protects our children and families keeping them connected to their culture. ICWA gives preference to Native tribes when Indigenous children are placed into foster homes or are being adopted, making this an important win to help ensure our tribal youth are raised in an environment surrounded by their culture and traditional ways. By upholding this law and rejecting the petitioners, the nation’s highest court has strengthened tribal integrity and our ability to self-govern. We are thankful that this matter is now resolved.
