Stand With Us at the State House: Protect Tribal Sovereignty

Stand With Us at the State House

Our Tribal community is being called to stand together on Thursday, October 15 at 12:00 PM at the Massachusetts State House as lawmakers consider language that could authorize so-called Historical Horse Racing (HHR) machines.

For us, this is about much more than gaming. It is about Tribal sovereignty and the Commonwealth keeping its word to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

The Commonwealth made commitments to our sovereign Tribal Nation through the Tribal-State Compact. The HHR proposal could sidestep Massachusetts' existing gaming laws and dramatically expand slot-style gaming outside the framework and protections the state already established. It would also significantly expand access to gambling for people ages 18 and older.

Our Tribe has been clear: a slot machine does not stop being a slot machine because you give it a different name.

Speakers will include Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Chairman Brian Weeden, Massachusetts State Senator Lydia Edwards and Representative David Vieira.

We need Tribal citizens, families, employees, friends and supporters to join us and make sure Beacon Hill hears from our community. Our numbers matter. Showing up together sends a strong message that our sovereignty, our Compact and our future are not negotiable.
