Several hundred Mashpee Wampanoag tribe members, friends, and fans attended the Mashpee High School girls’ varsity basketball game on February 9 to witness a young tribal member getting her 1000th point. And Amiyah Peters did not disappoint.
Only three points separated the Mashpee Falcons junior from her goal. After hitting a two-point shot in the first few minutes of the game, Amiyah passed the ball to her teammates to tease the lofty goal. Just five minutes into the game, she took her best shot, scoring three points, and the gym erupted in cheers.
The game stopped long enough for Amiyah’s family to join her on the court for congratulations and photos. The Falcons went on to defeat the Carver Crusaders 61 to 47.
Only three other players have scored more than 1,000 points in Mashpee High School girls’ basketball history. Amiyah still has her senior year to make this milestone even more impressive.
