Darius Coombs was recently nominated and chosen to the 2021 recipient of the Bay State Legacy Award. Darius was chosen for his many years of work to advance the history of indigenous people and diverse culture in Massachusetts.

Darius will be presented the award during the online Massachusetts History Conference on June 7. The award ceremony will take place from 5-6 PM.

The Bay State Legacy Award goes to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the interpretation and presentation of Massachusetts history and is awarded annually by the Massachusetts History Alliance at the Massachusetts History Conference.  For many years, the Bay State Historical League presented the John F. Ayer Award in recognition of an individual's contributions to the interpretation and presentation of Massachusetts history. After 101 years of service, the BSHL dissolved on January 1, 2005, at which time the Massachusetts History Conference planning committee decided to continue this recognition of an individual's contribution to Massachusetts history by inaugurating the Bay State Legacy Award. In 2017, the newly formed Massachusetts History Alliance inherited the honor of giving the award.
