Community Heat Advisory and Powwow Preparedness Notice

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Emergency Management Department is advising the community to take extra precautions as dangerous heat and humidity move into the region.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Barnstable County, including Mashpee, from 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, through 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. Heat index values are expected to range from 95°F to 105°F, with the most dangerous heat and humidity expected on Thursday and Friday.

As our community prepares for the Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow beginning Friday, July 3, everyone is encouraged to take steps to protect themselves, their families, and one another from extreme heat.

Heat Safety Tips

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.

Limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.

Take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas.

Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, hats, and sunscreen.

Never leave children, elders, or pets inside parked vehicles.

Check on elders, relatives, neighbors, and anyone who may be at greater risk for heat-related illness.

Powwow Cooling Station

To help keep everyone safe during Powwow, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Emergency Management Department, in collaboration with the Powwow Committee, will provide a Cooling Station at the event.

The Cooling Station will include an air-conditioned cooling tent, an outdoor misting and cooling fan, and free drinking water for attendees who need to cool down and rehydrate.

Community members, staff, volunteers, vendors, and visitors are encouraged to stop by the Cooling Station whenever needed throughout the event.

Know the Signs of Heat Illness

Signs of heat illness may include dizziness, headache, nausea, muscle cramps, confusion, and excessive fatigue. If you or someone else experiences these symptoms, move to a cool location immediately, drink water, and seek medical assistance if symptoms worsen.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately if someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, or has a body temperature that continues to rise.

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Emergency Management Department will continue monitoring weather conditions and will provide additional updates if necessary.

We wish everyone a safe, healthy, and enjoyable Powwow weekend. Stay hydrated, take breaks, and look out for one another.
