Falmouth Academy senior Kendall Currence and member of the Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe has already established herself as the greatest scorer in Cape Cod basketball history.
She now sets her sights on all of Massachusetts.
Currence became the 68th player in state history to score 2,000 career points, hitting the milestone with a 33-point performance in the Mariners’ 57-49 loss to the Barnstable Red Raiders on Wednesday, January 24.
“She’s really special,” said Falmouth Academy coach Gus Adams. “Stays composed, and she’s not afraid to take the big shot. ... It’s hard with all of the defense that she gets.”
Currence was coming off a 35-point night in a win over league rival Nantucket, which put her 11 points away from 2,000. Her total now stands at 2,022, putting her 60th behind 2006 Beaver Country Day graduate Caitlin Fisher, who scored 2,024.
Currence hit 2,000 late in the second quarter, capping a sequence that began with senior Jane Earley grabbing a steal and advancing the ball past midcourt. Earley, Currence’s backcourt partner over the last four years, lofted a pass to Currence just outside the low post, and Currence elevated over two defenders to hit the jumper with 1:07 until halftime.
Play immediately stopped as Currence’s teammates came over to embrace her.
“A lot of joy,” Currence said. “I only thought, when I came to high school, that I was going to get 1,000. But 2,000 is even better.”
The accomplishment overshadowed Barnstable’s best game of the year, the Red Raiders avenging a 44-42 home loss to the Mariners from earlier this month and snapping an eight-game losing streak dating back to mid-December.
