Tribal Council Adopts Amended and Restated Emergency Tribal Ordinance for May 16 Regular Election: Drive Thru and In Person Voting to Take Place at Community and Government Center

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has set a new date for its general election after issues were raised about the mail in ballot process at a March 22 Emergency Tribal Council Meeting.
After hearing the issues, the Tribal Council voted unanimously at the March 22 meeting to postpone the election to Sunday, May 16. Tribal council also unanimously approved a motion to rescind an emergency election ordinance that allowed for ballots to be returned by mail. A final ordinance guiding the election committee was approved by a majority of council members present at an Emergency Council Meeting on April 5.

The Mashpee Wampanoag Health Service Unit (IHS) has received the Pfizer vaccine onsite and can be administered to anyone 16 years of age or older. If you are currently eligible to receive vaccines through the IHS clinic and are interested in receiving this vaccination please contact the clinic to set up an appointment.

Registration for Seequn/Spring Vacation Camp Opens April 1

Tribal students in grades pre-k through 4 may attend the Seequn/Spring Vacation Camp from April 20-23. Registration for the camp opens Thursday, April 1. The camp will be open to 24 students.

Seequn camp will have cultural activities and events that will take place at the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Community and Government Center, 55 Acres, Mashpee Wampanoag Museum, Herring Run, and the farm on Sampson's Mill Road.
Pick up and drop off parent/caregiver will need to test negative for Covid-19 prior to the first day of camp. Detailed information on covid-19 guidelines will be provided when you register your child.

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Election Committee extends notice to all Enrolled Tribal Members who will turn 18 years of age on or before Sunday, May 16, 2021, that they are required to complete a Voter Registration Form in order to vote at the general election on Sunday, May 16, 2021 (the “Election Day”).
Tribal Court is honored to announce Thomas Weathers has been appointed as a Supreme Court Judge for the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Judge Weathers is an Aleut and an enrolled member of the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Emergency Management Department released a phased re-entry plan on March 30. The entire plan is posted on the Tribe’s website under the Emergency Management Department.
The MWT Phased Return to Re-entry Guidelines provides a safe, measured process for returning toward new normalcy in phases. The plan is based on all phases on continued prevention principles and daily surveillance of the health-indicators impacting the Community.
Cedric Cromwell, former tribal council chairman, has been charged with filing false tax returns on top of pending bribery and extortion charges. Cedric Cromwell no longer holds any official or unofficial position with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.
A federal grand jury in Boston returned a superseding indictment Monday with the new charges last month.
Alewives and blueback herring have had a long journey from the Atlantic Ocean to come here to spawn in the fresh waters in Mashpee on Land of the Wampanoag–People of the First Light. For more than 1,200 years they have visited us and still do. They swim all over Massachusetts. In Harper’s magazine in 1885 it was noted that Nemasket River in Middleborough was called an “Indian Journey” when herrings came. Shortly all the rivers will be full. If you see osprey and sea gulls flying above they are a sure sign that herring are here because they love herring also.
Mashpee Middle-High School will offer Wôpanâak, a language used by the Wampanoag Tribe, to 7th grade students this spring as part of language exploration.
“Just a phenomenal example of the relationship we’ve continued to build. It’s just a phenomenal thing,” Mashpee Middle-High School Principal Mark Balestracci said during the school committee meeting last week, March 17. “It’s really a great opportunity for all of our kids.”
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Housing Department is seeking bids from qualified contractors for: Residential Rehabilitation located in Mashpee, MA. The second to last week of March, Barnstable County had recorded more than 1,000 new positive COVID-19 tests in an average over the previous 14 days, with a positive-test rate of 5.6%. The positivity rate was more than double the statewide average during this timeframe. Also toward the end of March, the first case of the Brazilian variant P1 has been announced in Massachusetts in Barnstable County. B117 and B1351 have been identified in Massachusetts.

The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) hosted a three-part webinar series on tribal disaster preparedness efforts. During the webinar series, tribal emergency management experts walked tribal leaders and staff through the 2017 Tribal Declarations Pilot Guidance, answered questions, and highlighted how tribal nations can access emergency disaster resources.
Scarlett “Morning Butterfly” Miller, granddaughter of Kitty Hendricks-Miller, has been named to Stonehill College’s Fall 2020 Dean’s List. Scarlett, a freshman at Stonehill, is majoring in Psychology and is a member of the school’s club ice hockey team.
