Last month the Massachusetts Environmental Police coordinated the salvage of a moose struck on Route 2 in Athol, Massachusetts. Following the initial response by Massachusetts State Police Athol Barracks, Athol Police Department, and MassDOT , arrangements were made for safe recovery and distribution of the animal.
Thanks to the efforts of Rick French and Lt. Brighenti, approximately half of the salvaged meat was donated to our tribal Food Pantry, and additional parts of the moose—including the hide and shin bones—were respectfully presented to the tribe for cultural and ceremonial use. The remaining salvageable meat was shared with local sportsmen’s clubs, ensuring the animal was shared throughout the community.
Thank you to Elsie and Darline for helping coordinate the pick-up for the tribe. We also want to thank the Massachusetts Environmental Police for their efforts to recover the moose and provide it to the tribe so that we were able to honor its life and appreciate its sacrafice in our communities traditional ways.
