Tribal Council Establishes Old Indian Cemetery Commission

On May 24th tribal council voted unanimously to establish an Old Indian Cemetery Commission. An initiative like this has been requested by tribal members for quite some time and is an important step in properly looking after the cemetery as the final resting place of our tribal loved ones and ancestors. The commission will be responsible for creating the cemetery policies, procedures, rules, and regulations to help preserve and maintain the Old Indian Cemetery.

The committee will be made up of nine members comprised of the following: (1) Enrollment Personnel, (1) Member of the Elders Judiciary Committee, (1) Public works Personnel, (1) Tribal Historic Preservation Office Personnel, (1) Member of the Old Indian Meetinghouse Committee, and (4) members at large. All members will serve for a two-year term.

For more information regarding the commission, please review 2023-RES-058, which can be found in the member portal on the tribe’s website. Any tribal members who may be interested in joining the Old Indian Cemetery Commission can send an LOI to Secretary Jackson at cassie.jackson@mwtribe-nsn.gov.
