A Letter from Supreme Sachem in 1956: Affirming Chief Earl Mills, Sr.

On September 2, 1956, Supreme Sachem Leroy Perry officially responded to the persuasion of the Mashpee Wampanoag to appoint a new chief. Below is an excerpt of that letter.

On this date after Religious Services at the Old Indian Church at Mashpee, Mass., Rev. CC Wilson, Rev. and Supreme Sachem Ousa Mequin = Yellow Feather-Pocasset-Wampanoag = did confirm and declare-elected to the office of Chief of the Mashpee Indian Tribe according to a Petition by the majority of Families of Mashpee, Mass. And in accordance with a Council Meeting held at the Town Hall the night before Sat. the 1st of Sept.

I, the undersigned Supreme Sachem of the Wampanoag Councils of Mass. Do hereby present you with credentials confirming all that was necessary after the Supreme Sachem ceremonially confirmed you at the Church Service. You received the Name = “Flying Eagle” and, as such-you are in charge of all Council Meetings held by the Indians of Mashpee, Mass. And none is above you in office. 

To all concerned = Respect and obedience to the Chief’s will is hereby ordered and the Blessing of the Great Spirit requested on his years of Service Noosukkuhhum = I write this new Kenauau = to you-as, a OOwematin ut sagkimau = Brother and Chief = to = Ptooeu Wampsi Kook = Flying Eagle, Wampanoag Council of Mashpee, Mass.
