Tribal members Hazel Pocknett-Zine (first grade), Adriana DeBarros (fourth grade), and Emma Frye (fifth grade), each received the good manners award last month. The award, which the student's peers vote on, consists of a cash prize given to students who have demonstrated good manners throughout the school year. This award originates from a story in the early 1900s when Samuel Gross Davis, a wealthy realtor from Boston, was riding through Mashpee and a gust of wind blew his hat off his head. A young native boy quickly chased after the hat and returned it to Davis. When Davis passed, his will stated that he left 1/10th of his estate to the Mashpee school district to be awarded annually to well-mannered students.
