2022 Powwow Recap

The annual Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow returned last month after being canceled for the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The 101st annual powwow, with the theme of Honoring the Four Directions, took place on July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

The powwow featured special events, contests, drumming, and dancing. Ten food vendors and twenty-one craft vendors set up at powwow grounds for the duration of the weekend. The annual fireball ceremony made its return to powwow grounds on Saturday evening, and on the final day of powwow the Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow Princess and Little Miss Wampanoag were announced. Amiyah Peters was crowned as Powwow Princess, and Sophia Pocknett was crowned Little Miss Wampanoag. There was a high turnout of tribal members, members of sister tribal nations, and friends of the tribe for all three days.

The event was successful thanks to the powwow committee, employees, volunteers, community members, and generous sponsors. The powwow committee will be reconvening their meetings beginning in October to plan the next powwow. Tribal members are encouraged to submit letters of interest to take part in the planning process. The committee was excited to host the homecoming again and continues to look forward to the next gathering scheduled for July 1-3, 2023.
