MWT THPD Assistant Opportunity
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is pleased to offer a paid Summer 2026 internship opportunity through its Tribal Historic Preservation Department (THPD), made possible with funding support from the National Grid – Indigenous Peoples Initiative (Pilot Program).
As part of a National Grid-Indigenous Peoples Initiative we have developed this pilot project, the MWT Tribal Historic Preservation Assistant Internship invites students and emerging professionals to explore careers in cultural preservation, environmental justice, and tribal governance. Over a 3 month term, interns will gain hands on experience in areas such as Section 106 & NEPA Compliance project reviews, Archaeological investigations & In-field monitoring, Tribal GIS & Cultural Resource Mapping, Supporting NAGPRA & Repatriation Compliance, and Tribal Archives stewardship & Digital Access development.
Interns will work 20–30 hours/week at $22–$26/hour, based in Mashpee, MA, with limited remote flexibility. This program aims to strengthen internal Tribal capacity and foster workforce development in Indigenous and allied communities. Preference given to Indigenous applicants.
Eligibility: The ideal candidate shall be a graduate student, undergraduate student or have graduated from a college within 12 months of beginning the internship.
Deadlines: The THPD will be taking applications through April 17th, 2026 and selection will be made April 30th, 2026.
The THPD will notify the selected intern by May 8th, 2026

Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the intern is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to talk or hear. Ability to routinely lift 50 lbs., capable of pushing and pulling.
Additional Requirements: Able to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Preference is given to qualified Native American candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, U.S.C., Section 472)
