The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is soliciting interested Tribal members to contribute and assist in facilitating the "Moshup's Bridge Ethnographic Study" towards the nomination of the property as a Traditional Cultural Property (TCP) under the National Park Service's Historic Preservation Program.
Project work would include the review of historical records and interviews with knowledgeable Wampanoag Tribal members to gather pertinent information on the history of Moshup and the importance of Moshup to the Wampanoag people, including the creation of Moshup's Bridge, Martha's Vineyard/Nope; as well as other attributable features relative to the Moshup legends. The study will also include mapping and site visits to the island to identify essential features and conduct research and photography. Additional details about the ethnographic study are available at mittark.com.
To lead the study, a tribal member would need to be a historic preservation professional who meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards. Information on the Secretary's Standards is available at https://www.doi.gov/pam/asset-management/historic-preservation/pqs.
If you hold the necessary qualifications and are interested in being considered or for more information, please get in touch with the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer at (508) 477-0208 ext 102 or at David.Weeden@mwtribe-nsn.gov.
As an NRHP Listed Traditional Cultural Property (TCP), protective preservation measures are afforded to these culturally associated properties. Moshup Bridge is a familiar property. The legends are familiar cultural histories among Wampanoag and regional Tribes; this effort will help protect these sacred places and capture these oral histories for future generations.
