The Indian Health Services (IHS) Sanitation Program administered by the Tribe’s Housing Department recently completed a large water project for the tribal families on Emma Oakley Mills Way. For years the homes on Emma Oakley Mills Way, all tribal members, have been fighting unsafe water from the wells.

After completing a test of the water that confirmed it was contaminated, the Housing Department and IHS were able to tap into the sanitation program to bring clean water to the homes.

“We knew from tribal members that there was trouble with the water,” said Shellie Tobey, Housing Director. “We worked with engineers and the town of Mashpee to connect the homes to town water and utilized our IHS Sanitation Program to cover the costs. We were also able to connect two empty lots on the street.”

The sanitation program is best known for replacing septic systems for tribal members but also can address other sanitation needs, including clean water. Tribal members may apply for this program online at mashpeewampanoagtribe-nsn.gov/housing.
