Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal member Hunter Tobey was selected to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Youth Preparedness Council (YPC). Hunter received a letter of recommendation from Emergency Management Director Nelson Andrews after showing a strong interest in joining the YPC.
“This is a great accomplishment for Hunter,” said Andrews. “He deserves this appointment and will represent his tribe well. We’ve been working hard to promote opportunities like this to tribal youth and it’s such a positive affirmation to see a strong candidate from within our Tribe selected. He’s going to be a great addition to the YPC.
Hunter was selected from a pool of highly qualified applicants seeking to serve on the YPC, according to a statement from the Individual and Community Preparedness Division at FEMA. The statement went on to say that Hunter will play an important role in disaster preparedness and will help native communities be safer and more resilient before, during and after a disaster.
Hunter was selected for a two-year commitment. FEMA’s YPC provides a unique opportunity for youth leaders to serve on a highly distinguished national council; to complete national-level preparedness projects; to voice their ideas and questions on disaster preparedness with the leadership of FEMA and national youth preparedness organizations; and to participate in the YPC Summit. Being selected to serve on the YPC is an honor, but it is also a significant responsibility that requires dedication and time management skills.
