COVID-19 Community Testing Importance - Mashpee Indian Health Service Unit

In order to help stem the spread of the corona virus it is important to know where the virus is located. The purpose behind community testing is to identify which individuals have the virus so they can be separated from individuals who do not have the virus and thus help stop the spread of the disease and save lives.

Although community testing is extremely important, it is also important to note that although you may have received a negative test result previously there is still a risk of a potential COVID-19 infection during the interim and future re-testing should be scheduled.  Proper CDC guidelines should continuously be adhered to regarding the importance of wearing face coverings in public, avoiding large groups, staying 6ft away from everyone outside of your home, continuously hand washing or using hand sanitizer and disinfecting commonly touched areas.

FAQs

Q - I don’t feel sick, should I be tested?

A - When we are doing community testing we are not focusing on just patients who are sick. We want to take a look at the community as a whole including those without symptoms to get a better idea of how many people have been affected. This knowledge helps leaders make decisions regarding reopening plans.

Q - How long does the test result take to come back?

A - The test typically takes 2-3 days to come back but can take a little longer.

Testing is currently available at the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Health Service Unit (IHS) Clinic for all members of a Federally Recognized Tribe and those who reside within the same household.  To schedule a new test or a re-test at the IHS clinic please contact 508-539-2561.
