Welcome to Powwow from Chairman Weeden

Our annual powwow has arrived and will run Saturday, July 1st through Monday, July 3rd. Tickets for the Clam Bake are now on sale and I recommend purchasing your ticket as soon as possible. These tickets always sell out quickly.

Sunday will be our longest day with the annual Sly Fox Mish8n Race and the naming ceremony both taking place in the morning and Fireball in the evening. The naming ceremony will be at the Meeting House and the Mish8n race will be down at the pond. Both of those start at 7 AM. We’ll close out Sunday with Fireball at dusk.

On Monday we will crown a new Powwow Princess and Little Miss Wampanoag. Both Amiyah Peters and Sophia Cushing Pocknett have served their tribe well as our current Powwow Princess and Little Miss Wampanoag. They have inspired their peers and elders in the community as official representatives of our Tribal Nation. We have amazing young women in our Tribal Nation and I’m looking forward to seeing who is selected this year.

Another important note, parking is always challenge. Those that arrive early may find parking at our Community and Government Center or along the sidewalk of Great Neck Road South. As that parking fills, we are recommending that people park in the overflow parking between Marshall’s and Santander Bank at 3 Charles Street in Mashpee. This is located in the Roche Bros Plaza. You can also view a map of the parking here.

Also, for those not familiar with powwow etiquette, portions of powwow are not open to film and photography, such as honor songs, ceremony and fireball, and anyone that is taking a photo of someone in regalia should ask permission first. Children also should not play in the powwow circle and pets, drugs and alcohol are not permitted.

We enjoy inviting our tribal citizens, neighboring tribes and the public onto our homelands, and ask that our lands and laws are respected. While on our sovereign tribal lands, you are subject to Federal and Tribal Law and it is strictly enforced by Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Police per Tribal Council.

We all know how busy our powwow is and that there’s a lot more to see and do, but I did want to give our tribal community a quick update and highlight a few events. I’ll see you at Powwow in just a few days and remind you to check the powwow schedule online.

Ahâpây,
Chairman Weeden
