The Education Department provides paid internship opportunities for tribal youth to gain experience in various career fields. Below are a few highlighted students who have done great work in their respected internships.
Isaiah Peters has been completing an internship with Darius Coombs, focusing on cultural programming. Isaiah has assisted in cedar harvesting and wetu construction and has served as a mentor for the Wampanoag boys after-school group. His activities vary from day to day as he shadows Darius. According to Isaiah, this internship has been a great way for him to learn more about his culture and get daily hands-on experiences.
Amiyah Peters has completed an internship with Mashpee School Resource Officer Katie Hennessy. During her two-month internship, Amiyah shadowed Officer Hennessy in the school, where she helped foster relationships with students and gained knowledge on juvenile and adult law. On the weekends, Amiyah would do ride-alongs and patrol the roads in town. Amiyah now works for tribal security and is interested in a law enforcement career.
Russell Gonsalves has recently started an internship as an assistant to Chairman Weeden. Through this position, he has learned about the tribe's constitution and tribal law, how committee meetings function, and what a Chairman's day-to-day tasks are. Russell has enjoyed his internship experience and learning about the unique differences between tribal and state laws and regulations.
If you are a student or know of one who may be interested in completing an internship, please contact Talia Landry or Sassamin Weeden for more information.
