WLRP Releases Winter Class Schedule

The Wôpanâak Language Reclamation Project is providing the tribal community a series of language classes in 2024. The classes are offered in several communities and online. 2023/2024 Wôpanâak Beginner Immersion (Plymouth)

What: This is a fun introductory speaking class for those who are brand new to immersion learning. Immersion means we learn to speak by using our Wôpanâak Language without any English or other languages, through a variety of activities.

When: Mondays at 6:30-7:30PM, beginning on January 15th and concluding on March 25th.

Where: Meeting in-person at: Herring Pond Wampanoag Tribe 128 Herring Pond Road Plymouth, MA 02360

Prerequisite: There is no prerequisite for this class and any level learner is welcomed!*

Wôpanâak Beginner Workbook Class (New Bedford)

What: This is an 8 week in person workbook class for those who are new to learning about the language or for those who want a workbook brush-up.

Eligibility Requirements: Mashpee, Aquinnah, Assonet & Herring Pond enrolled tribal members and/or members of their household (tribal or non-tribal).  Except for youth-specific programs, children must be accompanied by an adult.

When: Sundays at 1:00-2:00PM, beginning on January 6th and finishing on February 24th

Where: Andrea McCoy Recreation Center, 181 Hillman St. Building 3, New Bedford, MA 02740

Prerequisite: There is no prerequisite for this class.

Wôpanâak Beginner Workbook Class (Mashpee)

What: This is a workbook class for those who are new to learning about the language or for those who want a workbook brush up.

When: Thursday at 5:30pm – 6:30pm, beginning January 11th, 2024, through March 7th,2024 

Where: 2C Center Street, Mashpee Ma, 02649

Prerequisite: There is no prerequisite for this class.

Wôpanâak Beginner Workbook Class (Aquinnah)

What: This 8 week workbook class is for those who are new to learning about the language or for those who want a workbook brush-up.

When: Wednesdays, beginning January 10th - February 28th from 6:30pm - 7:30pm

Where: In-person at the WTGHA, Community Center

Prerequisite: There is no prerequisite for this class.

Wôpanâak Noun Possession (Online Via Zoom)

What: This is a workbook class for those who want to learn how animate and inanimate nouns are possessed in the language.

Eligibility Requirements: Enrolled members of Mashpee, Aquinnah, Herring Pond and Assonet Wampanoag communities and their household members.

Where: This class will be held remotely over Zoom.

When: Wednesdays 7 p.m.-8 p.m. Beginning Jan 10 for approximately 10 weeks.

Prerequisite: Must have completed an Introduction/Beginner workbook class.
