Tribal Council Meetings Return to In-Person Only: Meeting Requirements for Anyone Seeking to Run for Office Return

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Tribal Council began live-streaming meetings over zoom. The platform, while convenient, created security problems for information that is only open to the Tribal community. Last month, the Tribal Council passed resolution 2023-RES-114 revoking the use of Zoom for the live-streaming of Tribal Council Meetings while it further looks into all concerns the technology raises.

With the resolution's passage, all Tribal Council Meetings have returned to how they were initially held, in person only. Meetings are open to all enrolled tribal members and their spouses.

Zoom meetings initially resulted during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. However, because the tribe's Declaration of a State of Emergency was removed this past June, and there are growing concerns about the privacy and security of the meetings, meetings have now reverted to being held in person only at the Community and Government Center. The Tribal Council intends to research more secure platforms to resume the live-stream service.

Meeting attendance requirements for those interested in running for Tribal Council are back in effect. These requirements state that:

"For a person, other than the Tribal Medicine man and Tribal Chief, to be eligible for election or appointment to the Tribal Council, that person shall: (5) be able to demonstrate attendance at a minimum of six Tribal Council or General Membership meetings, or a combination of those meetings, within the 12 months preceding the Tribal general election."

Tribal Council election and appointment eligibility requirements can be found under Article VI of the Constitution.

While the meetings will no longer be broadcasted, tribal members can still access meeting minutes, resolutions, and ordinances through the tribal member portal. All tribal members are encouraged to sign up on the tribe's website if they have not already done so.
