Last month we celebrated the Wampanoag New Year and honored the return of the Herring! At the annual Herring Day Celebration tribal youth were taught about the cultural significance of the Herring and how to harvest them responsibly. Following their time in the river, youth were brought across the street to the rebuilt community Smoke House to get a peek at the smoking process.
Rebuilding the Smoke House was a project organized by Indigenous Imprint with construction led by Tribal Members Cheenulka Pocknett and David Pocknett Jr. There, tribal families in the community can go and utilize the space for smoking as a way to help revitalize one of our traditional methods of food preservation.
If you are interested in learning more about this process and how to properly use the space, please contact indigenousimprint1491@gmail.com for more information.
