Archaeological Program at Washburn Island

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation (DCR) Archaeological Program will be conducting an Archaeological Reconnaissance and Intensive (Locational) Survey on Washburn Island as part of a Vulnerable Cultural Resources Adaptation Pilot Project. This multi-year pilot study is supported by state funding; and will enhance DCR's relationship with our Tribe and rekindle our associations to Washburn Island.  

 

Project Details:

  • Start Date: Monday, June 24th

  • Duration: Approximately one month (ending in July)

  • Schedule: Monday - Friday, weather permitting

  • Objective: Assess the archaeological and architectural elements of Washburn Island in relation to climate change vulnerability. Establish a place-based value assessment model reflecting the cultural value of Washburn Island to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe.

Community Involvement:

  • Who: Interested teens and young adults

  • What: Learn about archaeology and get familiar with Washburn Island

  • How: Contact Nakia Hendricks at the MWT Tribal Historic Preservation Department

Additional Information:

  • Coordination: Numbers, scheduling, and logistics need to be coordinated, so please reach out at your earliest convenience.

  • Community Input: The THPD and DCR staff, along with their consultants, will seek additional community input over the summer months. They are interested in stories, photos, and any other forms of connection to Washburn Island that reflect the Mashpee Wampanoag's ties to the island.
