Mashpee Veterans Monument Honors Wampanoag Service

A monument in Mashpee will be dedicated to all 252 men and women from Mashpee who served in all our nation’s wars from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam, including the names of 21 who never returned, giving the ultimate sacrifice. It is believed that this will be the only monument in the country that will contain the actual names of Native-Americans from one town that fought and sacrificed in all of America’s wars.

The dedication will take place on Saturday, June 17th with a parade and ceremony at the monument’s location in Community Park, across from town hall. The parade will start behind the Town Hall at 10:00 AM. (those marching should arrive at the Town Hall by 9:15 AM )  and proceed down Route 130 to Great Neck Road North to Collins Lane and into the park. The ceremony at the park’s gazebo will begin at the close of the parade and at the end of the ceremony, all will be invited to proceed to the monument for its unveiling. There is also interest in having Wampanoag singers and dancers participate in the event. If you are interested in taking part, please contact the tribe’s Historic Preservation Department.

Please be advised that handicapped parking and parking for seniors and elders will be available behind the Archives building across from Town Hall. Sections of Route 130 and Great Neck Road North will be closed for the parade. Police will begin shutting down those road sections at 9:30 AM. Therefore, anyone with handicapped parking passes or any seniors/elders wishing to park behind the Archive building should arrive before 9:30 AM. Satellite parking will be available at the Quashnet School on 150 Old Barnstable Road with shuttle bus transportation to and from Community Park. Some seating will be available, but anyone wishing to sit during the ceremony is urged to bring their own lawn chair.
