MISSION

The Mission of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Court is to provide equal quality access to justice in a safe, fair, and unbiased environment. The Tribal Court will treat individuals with respect and dignity, strive to be adaptable to the needs of all people, and administer justice with integrity, efficiency, and professionalism in order to foster trust and confidence within our sovereign nation. As a separate but equal branch of the Tribal government, the court will justly and without prejudice adjudicate all matters, including but not limited to appeals, to the maximum extent possible through the Tribal Constitution and Tribal Ordinances.

TRIBAL COURT

The Purpose of the Tribal Court is to care for the Mashpee land and community in harmony with the Creator and Spirit of the People of the First Light. Harmony means continually having a mind that is together with someone else’s which is vital to be able to maintain stability within the Tribe. In addition, Community Health helps address the connection between the people and the land. The Principle states that the health of the community at large depends on recognizing the connection of all things and people, and the responsibility that we all have to each other. For Mashpee peoples, a mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically healthy community is achieved when this Principle is reached.

All individuals who appear before the tribal court are assured a fair, prompt, and impartial hearing that guarantees their rights as outlined by the Tribal Constitution. There are three types of courts, Supreme Court, District Court, and Peacemaker Court.

In addition to hearing civil, criminal and peacemaking cases, the Tribal Court is also working on several activities that will strengthen our judicial infrastructure.

These include:
